School Of Arts And Sciences

Biology is the study of living organisms: their structure, function, organization, origin, and evolution. The science which deals with the study of living objects and their life processes is called biology (Greek words, bios – life, logos – study). Biology, also referred to as the biological sciences, is the study of living organisms utilizing the scientific method. You’ll explore the fundamental nature of water and develop your field study skills on a scientific trip around the hydrological cycle. From ecology to molecular biology, the science of biology studies them all.

Four unifying principles form the foundation of modern biology: cell theory, evolution, genetics and homeostasis. Students who study the biological sciences will be able to pursue many career avenues particularly within research, teaching, sales and in field work roles. Evolution is the change over time that is the engine of biological diversity. Whatever the initial tension between the two disciplines, newer methods and critical insights made their way into evolutionary biology leading to a new area of research traveling under the new banner of molecular evolution.

The centrality of evolution and its organizing, unifying properties made its way into textbooks of evolution that reached both secondary school and university level students, bolstering the discipline of evolutionary biology and its inclusion into the biological sciences curriculum; this was increasingly the case all over the world. The Apfeld Lab seeks to dissect the interplay between redox processes and age-dependent changes in tissue function in the nematode C. elegans, in order to shed light on the association between the dysregulation of the cellular redox environment and many human diseases of aging.

These experiences prime our students for graduate and medical school admissions as well as various careers in biology. The Biology majors can be used as preparation for graduate school or professional careers in technical fields, the health sciences and education. This field has become increasingly important in recent years, and requires students to develop significant mathematical and computer science nous, much like the interdisciplinary field of bioinformatics, which involves developing and improving on methods for storing, retrieving, organizing and analyzing biological data and developing software tools to generate useful biological knowledge.

The animal behavior major blends biology and psychology to examine study life from a variety of perspectives, including ecological, evolutionary and physiological dimensions. Related labs, tutorial sessions, and field trips provide hands-on experience in a wide range of biological disciplines. Few areas of biological science are more thought provoking than the field of transgenerational epigenetic inheritance. In anatomy, you will study the composition of the human body and how it operates as a living organism.
